The Guardians didn't know the Dark Master was a Purple Dragon
#1
So, in the cutscene after you defeat the Ice King in Dante's Freezer, Volteer says there were rumors of a purple dragons countless generations ago but were considered myths. That means Malefor's existence as a purple dragon wasn't written in public history and future generations had no idea that the Dark Master was one until DOTD.

Looks like Malefor's path to evil was so severe that the ancestors chose not to chronicle Malefor's existence in the history books.

Maybe the Guardians thought the Dark Master would be another dragon, and their master and parents didn't tell them.

I don't know Malefor's exact age, but he must have seen several purple dragons before meeting Spyro, am I wrong?

All the Guardians knew was that they were fighting an enemy called the Dark Master and they didn't know he was a rare purple dragon like Spyro. They've been fighting the Dark Armies for centuries, over a thousand years after Malefor started the war even after he was imprisoned in Convexity.

The Chronicler also mentioned that not all of dragon history was recorded, only most of it, and the records within the White Isle "date back to the beginning of time, nearly".

For more than a millennium...

Misery, so much war, it almost sounds like a story with Sauron from Lord of the Rings.

Well after on DotD it looked pretty good, but for the stories that weren't recorded, do you think who would have had someone destroy them for not showing the truth?

It's possible, but speculations are endless. It's possible what Malefor said was true about purple dragons and they weren't recorded by the dragon race to save face, or something else happened.

There are so many possibilities that we don't know, we can only leave assumptions.

That's too bad that in the trilogies, they don't have bonuses like "Find the lost pages of the world" to know certain things about this, I would have found that nice for that we get to know some things about the Dragon Realms.
